Sunday 28th July 2019 is World Hepatitis Day . This is an important health issues in prison. A recent review estimated that, of the 10·2 million people in prison worldwide on any given day in 2014, 15·1% have hepatitis C virus (that’s 1 546 500 people) and 4·8% have chronic hepatitis B virus (that’s 491 500 people) (Dolan, 2016).
The prison setting present challenges and opportunities for the prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis, and in the vlog below, Dr Roberto Monarca, Infectious Diseases Specialist and Head of the Health Unit at the Maximum Security Prison in Viterbo, Italy, and Health Without Barriers’ Scientific Director, outlines some of these.
