This UNODC handbook outlines the need for the promotion of mental health in prisons as a key element of prison management and health care policies. The development of comprehensive policies and strategies aiming to protect the mental well-being of all prisoners and to ensure that those with mental disabilities have timely access to suitable and individualized treatment, provided on the basis of informed consent, equivalent to that in the community, is essential to ensure the effective management of mental health care in prisons.
